Thank you very much for your interest in volunteering at Sunbeam Centre!
Our clients are people with diverse and complex developmental challenges. Your participation in their lifestyle activities is not just a feel-good opportunity: the clients benefit in myriad ways from the socialization, the change of pace, and the chance to have fun and let loose. Their emotional and social well-being is positively and directly impacted by the work volunteers do. We are very pleased to consider your application for this important role.
The minimum age to volunteer at Sunbeam is 14 years, and the minimum commitment may be two hours per week for three months. Shifts are generally 2 hours in length.
OUR APPLICATION PROCESS
Our application process is designed to provide us with information about your abilities, experience and interests, as well as providing you with orientation and training for working with our clients. Applicants must successfully complete each step prior to moving on to the next one. Only applicants deemed suitable for the volunteer position(s) applied for will be accepted. Applicants with incomplete forms or packages will not be contacted for an interview.
Our Volunteer Application Package can be completed online. If you prefer to print out and complete the forms to be mailed, dropped off or faxed to our Kingsway Facility, you can download them below.
Printed packages can be faxed to (519) 893-9034 or mailed to the following address:
2749 Kingsway Drive
Kitchener, Ontario N2C 1A7
If you wish to drop off your package personally, our dropbox is located at the top of the wheelchair ramp at the main entrance.
STEP 1 – Complete our Volunteer Application Form
If you complete our application form online, you’ll be required to sign a printed copy if you are contacted to come in for an interview. If you are under 18 years of age and are contacted for an interview, you will also need to provide a Parental Consent form.
STEP 2 – Obtain two (2) Volunteer References
We require two volunteer references that will be contacted as part of the application process. We prefer that they fill out our Volunteer Reference Check form rather than providing their own letter or note.
Your references can complete this form online or offline – please direct them to this page.
STEP 3 – Applicant Interview
If you have met the eligibility criteria, you’ll be contacted to attend an interview with the Volunteer Services Coordinator. Your interview will include a tour of our Kingsway Facility and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions.
STEP 4 – Criminal Records Check
Volunteers who have successfully completed the interview process will be required to obtain a Criminal Records Check for the Vulnerable Sector (CRC).
A form letter addressed to the Waterloo Regional Police Service will be given to you, indicating that you are applying to volunteer at Sunbeam Centre. Please take this form letter to any police station in the Region of Waterloo along with $10 (cash only). The police will ask you to complete their CRC form on their premises. Please obtain a receipt from the police for the $10 service fee as Sunbeam Centre can reimburse you. You will be contacted by the police once the CRC is ready for pick-up.
A Criminal Records Check can take up to one month to be processed and you cannot begin your volunteer work until Sunbeam Centre staff have reviewed it.
STEP 5 – Attend an Orientation Session
Orientation sessions are held regularly in a classroom setting. You will learn about people with diverse and complex developmental challenges, how to communicate with non-verbal people, wheelchair management, how to interact with staff as part of the team, and many other practical topics.
Based on your particular volunteer job description, you may need further training, which will be arranged at a later date.
STEP 6 – Welcome to Sunbeam!
Upon completion of the orientation session, you will be considered a volunteer, ready for placement!
Throughout the process, the Volunteer Services Coordinator will be working with you and Sunbeam staff to determine the right placement for you. At the orientation session, your next steps will be outlined for you in detail.
